The land for the county was taken from portions of existing Wyth and Russell Counties. The county was named after Henry Tazewell, a United States Senator from Virginia as well as a state legislator and judge. It was Jeffersonville's role as county seat that ultimately led to it being renamed Tazewell after the county which it serves.
